Every church has members who would love to sing in the Choir, but they have not taken the plunge yet. The Welcome2Choir Institute of Choir Growth can help identify them and connect them to the choir!

My story:

Seminary taught about Music History, Conducting, Vocal Pedagogy, and such, but they did not teach me how to build a choir! Since that ability would determine my future church jobs, I set a course to learn the ends and outs of choir growth. I had 2 very important advantages for examples of successful ministers of music.

First, I grew up under Larry Black and R.O. Stone. Both men were as fine an example of choir growth experts as you could find! Just being around them was like a Master Class of growing choirs and engaging members.

Second, I toured for 4 ½ years with a folk-gospel trio and sang in about 500 Baptist churches. I met ministers of music who had great choirs and those that struggled to have people show up for choir. There was a pattern to the way the successful ministers of music operated their programs.

After Seminary graduation, I began my career as a church musician. Several years in, some other ministers of music wanted to find out what my “secret” was for growing choirs. It was no secret that applying certain practices and procedures created an atmosphere of choir growth. I was invited to share my ideas in conferences and seminars. We developed podcasts and videos like “Seven Habits of Successful Choir Builders”, “Overflow Your Choir Loft”, and “You Can Build a God-Sized Choir”, and finally, “You Can Re-Build a God-Sized Choir”.

Because of the tremendous loss of choir members during the Covid pandemic, and the fact that there is not a universal effort to train ministers of music with the choir building concepts, we decided to create the “Welcome2Choir Institute of Choir Growth”. The Institute will feature a Choir Growth Campaign that will help add members to your choir and better connect existing members to the choir.

Since most choirs start ramping up in August as they prepare for Christmas music, now is a great time to start laying the groundwork for a choir surge in August.
